BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Nicole Groat scored six goals and
Taylor Plorin made 26 saves in two games as the Sonoma State women's water polo team blew out Gannon 17-6 in the morning before holding on to a narrow 9-8 victory over Mercyhurst in the afternoon Saturday to wrap up play at the Fluid Five, hosted by Indiana University. The Seawolves will return home for to host Santa Clara on Thursday at 3:00 pm with an even 10-10 record this season.
Sonoma State 17, Gannon 6 -- Box ScoreAfter both teams traded goals and was tied at 2-2, the Seawolves reeled off six unanswered goals to take an 8-2 lead with 5:43 to play in the second quarter. The teams would again find themselves going goal for goal, and a score by Gannon at the 4:48 mark of the third period put the score at 11-6 in favor of SSU. However, the Seawolf offense again scored six unanswered goals to cruise to the 17-6 victory.
Both Groat and
Taylor Brown led the way with four goals,
Lyndsie Williams scored three, and
Carleigh Robinson,
Nicole Cunningham and
Noelle Herrera each scored two in the win. Plorin made 11 saves in the cage.
Sonoma State 9, Mercyhurst 8 -- Box ScoreLeading 4-3 with 4:02 to play in the first half, the Seawolves went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-3 lead over Mercyhurst at the 3:05 mark of the third quarter. The teams then traded goals to make it 9-4 in favor of SSU with 9:22 to play in the contest. From then on, the Lakers threw in four unanswered goals to come within one at 9-8, but time ran out as the Seawolves held on for the win.
Kaysie Lewis caged four goals, Groat added two, and Robinson, Williams and
Sydney Tatum had one each. Plorin made a season-high 15 saves.
