ROHNERT PARK -- Trailing 7-3 with 4:29 remaining in the contest,
Carleigh Robinson,
Noelle Herrera and
Nicole Groat scored on three consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to one goal, but the Sonoma State women's water polo team missed a potential game-tying shot on its final possession before visiting Santa Clara ran out the clock in Thursday's 7-6 loss at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves fell to 10-11 and the NCAA Division I Broncos of the Golden Coast Conference improved to 7-10.
Herrera broke the scoreless tie at the 3:33 mark of the first quarter and it would remain 1-0 in favor of SSU until Santa Clara scored a goal at the 6:40 mark of the second period.  Robinson threw one into the cage just over a minute later to put the Seawolves up 2-1, but the Broncos came back with four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead with three minutes to play in the third.
Groat scored at the 6:39 mark of the fourth quarter, but Santa Clara caged two very important insurance goals at 5:51 and 4:29 to take a 7-3 advantage.  That's when Sonoma began its rally, but would see it fall short with seconds left in the game.
Robinson, Herrera and Groat each scored twice as Robinson added three assists and two steals.
Taylor Plorin, the reigning WWPA Player of the Week, made eight saves and recorded five steals in the loss.
Sonoma State will be back in action next Saturday (April 2nd) when it hosts fellow WWPA members UC San Diego and Cal State Monterey Bay for a tripleheader at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool.  Sonoma and UCSD will kick things off at 10:00 am, followed by a neutral-site match between UCSD and Cal State Monterey Bay at 1:00 pm, then SSU will hop back in the pool for a 4:00 pm matchup with CSUMB.
