ORANGE, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team captured its sixth straight win (and seventh in its last eight games) with a convincing 7-4 victory over host Chapman on Sunday afternoon at Allred Pool. The Seawolves have improved to 8-8 this season ahead of Friday's home matchup with Hartwick. First sprint is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
The Seawolves took an early lead and shut down the Panther offense in the opening half to earn the weekend sweep over Chapman. The Seawolves opened up strong taking a 3-1 lead in the first period.
Amanda Weddle lifted Sonoma to 4-1 with a goal at the 3:48 minute mark of the second quarter.
Lily Carlon then broke away with ball with 1:24 left in the second half to extend the Seawolves lead to 5-1.
After both teams were held scoreless through the first five minutes of the second half,
Kaysie Lewis extended the Seawolves lead to 6-1 in the third period. The Seawolves tacked on another goal two minutes into the fourth period by
Sydney Tatum to lift their lead to 7-1 and their run to 6-0.
Trailing 7-1 with five minutes left in the fourth period, the Panthers went on 3-0 run to tighten the score 7-4. However the goals by Emily Fong, Katie Dalgamouni and Kate Avery weren't enough to help the Panthers overcome a six goal deficit.
Lewis finished with two goals, three assists and one steal for Sonoma State.
Taylor Plorin made 12 saves in the victory, giving up three of the four goals scored by Chapman on Sunday. Carlon replaced Plorin in the cage for the final 13 seconds of the game and allowed the fourth and final goal with one second left on the clock.
