HAYWARD, Calif. -- Carleigh Robinson scored five goals, including the go-ahead goal that lifted the Sonoma State women's water polo team to a nailbiting 10-9 victory over host and WWPA-foe Cal State East Bay on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Pool in Hayward.
Robinson, who has scored 15 of her team-leading 45 goals in just the last four games, scored the first of five on the day to open the second period and give SSU a 4-2 lead. CSUEB answered with three consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead, but
Noelle Herrera tied the contest up at 5-all with a goal at the 5:08 mark of the second quarter. The Pioneers put another goal in on their next possession for the 6-5 lead, but Robinson knotted the game up at 6-6 just before halftime. She then gave Sonoma a 7-6 advantage just over a minute after the halftime break.
Sabrina Hatzer, who scored eight goals against the Seawolves in the first meeting between these two teams in Rohnert Park in February, netted one of her three goals on the day to bring CSUEB even with SSU again, but at 7-7.
Kaysie Lewis and Robinson then scored on back-to-back possessions midway through the third quarter to put the visitors up by two, but Cal State East Bay rallied for two goals of its own for another tie game at 9-9 midway through the fourth.
With 2:41 to play, that's when Robinson buried the eventual game-winner. Both teams were able to fire off two more shots each, but to no avail, allowing SSU to escape Hayward with the narrow 10-9 win.
Lewis had three goals for Sonoma and Herrera had two.
Taylor Plorin made eight saves in the cage.
Sonoma State, at 11-13 overall and 2-1 in WWPA action, will play its final regular season match next Saturday at Fresno Pacific, beginning at 4:00 pm. The Seawolves will then prepare for the WWPA Championships at Chabot College in Hayward on Apr. 29-May 1. For more information about the WWPA Championships, visit the official web site by
