BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. -- Carleigh Robinson scored a game-high four goals and
Lyndsie Williams added two goals with two assists and seven steals as the Sonoma State women's water polo team exploded for eight goals in the second half en route to an 11-5 victory over host Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at The Tank of Otters.
The Seawolves (1-4) captured their first win of the season, which is also the first-career coaching win for SSU interim head coach
Chelsea Hennan. The Otters open the campaign at 0-1.
Robinson broke the scoreless tie with her first of four goals at the 5:28 mark of the first quarter, but CSUMB's Morgan Tucker responded 16 seconds later to even the score at 1-1. Tucker scored another goal nine minutes later to put the Otters up 2-1, but the Seawolves scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead with 5:08 to play in the third period.
Tucker again netted a penalty goal for the hosts to make it 5-3, but it was all Sonoma State from then on, as the Seawolves outscored their WWPA-foes 6-2 through the final 11 minutes of action to come away with the 11-5 win.
Nicole Groat and
Taylor Brown each had two goals and
Lily Carlon added one to complement the six combined goals from Robinson and Williams. Goalie
Taylor Plorin made 10 saves and snatched three steals. As a team, Sonoma took advantage of its powerplay opportunities, going 3 for 4 in 6-on-5 action.
For CSUMB, Tucker had the three aforementioned goals while Tatiana Veloso and Melisa Lovos caged one each to lead the way for the Otters offensively.
Sonoma State will return to action next Saturday (Feb. 4th) with two games in Santa Clara, one against Fresno Pacific at 11:00 am, followed by a 4:30 pm matchup with host Santa Clara, both at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
