CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Taylor Brown and
Carleigh Robinson netted hat tricks to lift the Sonoma State women's water polo team to a 10-8 victory over Chapman Saturday morning, but the Seawolves (5-13) were forced to settle for a split after coming up short to Whittier, 13-12, to wrap up the Convergence Tournament in Claremont.
Sonoma State will remain in Southern California to battle with Redlands Sunday at 11:00 am before coming home to host UC Santa Barbara on Thursday at 5:00 pm.
Sonoma State 10, Chapman 8 -- Box Score
After taking a 2-0 lead, the Seawolves allowed two unanswered goals to Chapman to knot the score at 2-2, but Robinson,
Sydney Tatum, Brown and
Nicole Groat scored goals to go up by four, 6-2. Chapman eventually closed the gap to two goals at 8-6 with 5:41 to play in regulation, but Robinson and
Nicole Cunningham put the game out of reach with goals of their own late in the period.
Taylor Plorin allowed just two goals in 16 minutes of work between the posts, making three saves and two steals.Â
Lisa Rodarmel came in for the second half and made four saves.
Whittier 13, Sonoma State 12 -- Box Score
While the Seawolves never held a lead in the game, they kept the pressure on Whittier from start to finish. It was the Poets to hold a 12-9 advantage with five minutes left to play in the contest, but back-to-back goals by
Taylor Brooks and Brown got Sonoma within one goal at 12-11 with 3:30 remaining, but Whittier connected on a very important insurance goal at the 2:28 mark to lead 13-11. Brown again cut the deficit to just one goal with 1:04 to play, and the Seawolves had the final possession of the game to try and force OT, but to no avail as Whittier held on for the 13-12 win.
Groat led the offense with four goals while Robinson,
Lyndsie Williams and Brown had two goals. Brooks and Cunningham each had one. Plorin made 10 saves and one steal.
