ROHNERT PARK -- For the second straight time this season, the Sonoma State women's water polo team defeated NCAA Division I Santa Clara, and on Saturday, the 8-5 victory came at home to improve to 8-17 this season. The Broncos fell to 6-17.
The Seawolves raced out to a 4-1 lead late in the first half, but a Santa Clara score just before halftime cut SSU's lead in half to 4-2. The Broncos would come to within one goal on a pair of occasions, the last being a 5-4 score in favor of Sonoma, but
Cassidy Mundt,
Lily Carlon and
Lyndsie Williams put the game out of reach with goals in the final 11 minutes.
The SSU defense, led by goalie
Taylor Plorin, also came up big in the second half, not allowing an SCU goal for nearly 11 minutes. In fact, Sonoma only allowed one Bronco goal in the final 14 minutes of Saturday's contest. Plorin ended with nine saves and four steals in the victory.
Offensively,
Nicole Groat had a team-high three goals and
Taylor Brown had two.
Sonoma State will return to the pool on Saturday, hosting Cal State East Bay in a big WWPA matchup starting at 1:00 pm at Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park.
