ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team erased a four-goal deficit in a matter of three minutes midway through the third quarter, but Fresno Pacific regained its composure to steal the win over the host Seawolves, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon at Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves fall to 0-5 while the Sunbirds improve to 2-5.
The Seawolves got off to a fast start as
Lyndsie Williams and
Amanda Weddle scored goals on back-to-back possessions early in the contest for the 2-0 lead. The Sunbirds came back with a pair of goals to knot the score at 2-2, then the teams went back-and-forth until
Taylor Brown pulled SSU even at 4-4 with 6:28 left in the second period. Just seconds later, FPU began what would be a 4-0 run stretching into the second half to make it 8-4. Freshman
Taylor Brooks,
Sydney Castaneda, Brown and Brooks again added four unanswered goals to make it a tie game once again at 8-8 with 3:50 left in the third.
The Sunbirds scored to make it 9-8 on their next possession, but then JoJo Williams and Brooks went back-to-back to give the hosts their first lead since the first quarter, a 10-9 advantage with under two minutes left to go in the third quarter. However, FPU scored early in the fourth quarter, then caged the go-ahead goal with 2:59 left to retake the lead at 11-10. It would prove to be the game-winner as Fresno Pacific held on.
Brown and Brooks ended with three goals each. Weddle,
Lily Carlon and Brown each handed out two assists. Goalie
Brooke Sullivan, who took over in the cage at halftime, made three saves and two steals in the final 16 minutes of action.
