CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's water polo suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 loss surrendering a goal in the final seconds against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to open play on Friday before rallying for a 10-7 victory over Whittier to split on opening day of the Convergence Tournament in Claremont.
The Seawolves improve to 2-9 on the year and will play two more games in the Convergence Tournament on Saturday against Concordia (11:40 am) and La Verne (2:20 pm).
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7, Sonoma State 6 -- Box Score
Cassidy Mundt and
Lily Carlon put the Seawolves up 2-0 early, but back-to-back goals by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps evened the score at 2-2 with 2:47 left in the first quarter. From then on, neither team would lead by more than one goal at any time.
The Seawolves would later take a 6-5 lead late in the third period on a goal by JoJo Williams, but CMS came back with a goal early in the fourth to knot the score at 6-6, then with three seconds left in regulation, the hosts scored the game-winner to stun Sonoma.
Mundt and Carlon both had two goals each in the loss.

Sonoma State jumped out to leads of 2-0, 5-2 and 7-5 in the game, only to have Whittier claw back and even the score each time. Tied 7-7 late in the third quarter, that's when the freshman
Taylor Brooks went off for three goals to give the Seawolves the 10-7 victory.
Brooks ended the game with five goals, Mundt added two, and Williams, Taylor Books and
Amanda Weddle each scored one. Weddle also added two assists.
Lisa Rodarmel and
Brooke Sullivan combined for 11 saves and three steals in the cage for SSU.
