#18 Seawolves Drop Two to #3 Chico State

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 CHICO, Calif. -- #18 Sonoma State started their four game series against #3 Chico State Friday. The Wildcats swept the day earning a 5-2 win in game one and taking the second game 11-7.

Game 1
In the first game of the series, the Seawolves sent Brielle Vidmar to the mound. She was welcomed in the second inning when the catcher Claire Wayner hit a two-run home run to left field giving the home team a quick 2-0 lead. Chico State continued scoring in the third when Wendy Cardinali hit a solo home run to bring Chico's lead to 3-0. The Wildcats would manage to score two more runs in the inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Seawolves responded in the fifth on a single from Malroy Masajlo who would score Karly Macadangdang, allowing the visitors to get on the board. In the sixth inning Alex Flores would score on a double by Alee Balanon closing the Chico lead to three runs. Unfortunately the Seawolves were unable to score any more and would lose the game 5-2.

Vidmar would wind up pitching the entire game, giving up five runs off of six hits while managing to strike out five Wildcats. She moves to 11-6 on the year. Haley Gilham pitched the complete game for the home team giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits. She moves to 18-2 on the year.

Game 2
The Seawolves would answer their game one offensive woes with a four run second inning to start the scoring for game two. Lindsey Calcany Blair started the high scoring affair with a sacrifice fly scoring Sarah Langley. The Seawolves would manage to score three additional runs in the inning to start the game with a commanding 4-0 lead. The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the inning off a Wendy Cardinali sacrifice fly to left field, cutting the Chico deficit to 4-1. In the third inning, the Seawolves second baseman would help put her team on the board again with a single to left field scoring Macadangdang and giving the away team a 5-1 lead.

Problems would begin to occur for the Seawolves in the bottom of the inning. Cyrena Taylor led off the inning with a solo homerun to center field, followed by a Bailey Akins double where she would end up scoring on the next batters single ending Brigid Ruiz day after two complete innings of work. Gaby Dupree came into relief the starter pitcher. After loading the basis, Dupree's day would be done when the Seawolves called in game one starter Brielle Vidmar. The Seawolves would end up losing their lead and give up nine runs in the innings, trailing the Wildcats 10-5.

The Seawolves responded in the fifth inning. Karly Macadangdang led off the inning with a solo homerun, her fifth of the year. Sonoma State would manage to score an additional run off a Julie Davis single cutting the Wildcat lead to 10-7. In the bottom of the inning, Chico State would retaliate by scoring another run bring their lead to four. The Seawolves couldn't respond and would drop the second game of the double header 11-7.

Starting pitcher Brigid Ruiz only went two innings and gave up four runs in a no decision result. Her replacement Gabby Dupree would not manage to get a single out in her appearance and gave up two runs and received the loss, she moves to 2-2 on the year. Brielle Vidmar, who started game one, came in to relieve Dupree would finish the game. The pitcher from Clovis, Calif would go five innings giving up five runs. For the Wildcats, their starting pitcher Naomi Monahan went 1.2 innings giving up four runs (three earned) and would be replaced by Sam Mulock who would get the win improving to 4-0. She pitch a strong 3.1 innings managing to give up just three runs. Amanda Flores would finish the game for the home team pitching two solid innings.

Sonoma State fall to 25-16 while Chico State improves to 37-3. The Seawolves look to bounce back tomorrow when they finish their four game series against the Wildcats. First pitch will be at noon.
