BOX SCORE 2 Santa Rosa, Calif. –Sonoma State split series opener with No. 14 UC San Diego, dropping game two 14-2 in five innings. The Seawolves (6-8, 4-4 CCAA) captured a 3-1 win in game one before the Tritons (16-5, 14-4 CCAA) rallied for a 14-2 run-rule victory in five innings in game two.
Sonoma State and UC San Diego are scheduled to wrap up the series with another doubleheader on tomorrow beginning at 11:00 am.
Game One: Sonoma State 3, No. 14 UC San Diego 1
Small ball early on and a strong defense helped the Seawolves to a 3-1 victory over the Tritons.
In the first Sonoma State capitalized on a first and third situation drawing a throw to score
Alee Balanon and a single by
Cameron Kirtlan to Davis for an early 2-0 advantage over UC San Diego.
In the bottom of the third, Sonoma cushioned its lead when
Nicole Renner roped an RBI single up the middle allowing Kirtlan to score for the 3-0 advantage.
It remained 3-0 in favor of SSU until the top of the fifth when the Danica Kazakoff hit a sacrifice fly to score Kinley Kyro to make it 3-1.
Brielle Vidmar threw a no-hitter, and recorded her fourth win of the season, featuring five strikeouts against 21 batters faced in seven.
Game Two: No. 14 UC San Diego 14, Sonoma State 2
In the nightcap, the Tritons pounced early and often, posting ten runs in the first three innings to run away with the 14-2 victory in five innings. UC San Diego managed six runs in the top of the second, then added four more in the third.
Offensively, Kirtlan smashed her third homerun of the season in the third, a two-run shot that also brought Davis home, cutting the Triton lead to 10-2.
Besides Kirtlans homer Balanon and Davis both went 2-for-3 in game two.
