Phoenix, AZ - Women's water polo headed into the Cross Conference Challenge with a ton of confidence after falling by 1 goal to nationally ranked University of Pacific. They had a competitive schedule against division I opponents Princeton University and host team Arizona State University.
The Seawolves opened the tournament with a terrific win over Azusa Pacific in a a game that went down to the wire. Azusa jumped out to a 2 goal lead after the first period, however, Sonoma would respond with 2 goals in the second and a shut out to tie it back at 4 at the half.
Camille Grace and
Annika Erickson responded with those two goals in the second giving plenty of momentum going into the half for the Seawolves. Erickson would finish the game with 4 goals followed by
Cassidy Mundt who put away 3 herself. SSU would pull off the win in the final moments of the game scoring 3 goals in the 4th period including the game winner from
Annika Erickson.
The second match of the day included the #15 ranked Tigers of Princeton University. Despite their status, the Seawolves were incredibly tough and put up an hec of a fight. Coach Chelsea Hennen stated, "we were in the game the entire time. We played them so tough and deserved to win the game. I was very happy though with our performance and the way we competed in the game." Sonoma would fall 9-7 to the Tigers but remained in a confident mindset heading into the final day of the tournament.
The final day of the Cross Conference Challenge included the host team of Arizona state and NAIA opponent Ottawa University. The #10 ranked Sundevils were a bit of a wake up call for the Seaolves as they dropped the game 18-5. Despite the bad loss the Seawolves got back on track with a dominating win over Ottawa 13-2! Leading goal scorers for Sonoma included
Cassidy Mundt and
Annika Erickson. Senior
Jordan Williams also got on the board with a goal and an assist in the game. Goalies
Brooke Sullivan and
Allison Dugdale split time in the game with a half each. Each keeper allowed just one goal, Dugdale recorded 6 saves and Allison recorded 5 for the game.
The Seawolves seem to be hitting their stride a bit with some stiff competition early in the season. Water polo is now 2-5 on the season and they travel to Santa Clara on February 15th for their next game and will look for their third win on the season.
