BOX SCORE 2 IRVINE, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team once again earned a split of their two games at the Concordia Kick-Off Classic. The Seawolves opened strong, taking down No.3 ranked Biola 13-8 before falling to Northwest Nazarene 7-2 in the nightcap.
SSU put on a hitting clinic against the nationally ranked Eagles in the afternoon tilt, rapping out 17 hits and plating 13 runs. The Seawolves recorded at lease one hit in every inning and scored in five of the seven frames. The offense started early with extra base hits coming from the first four batters. After a
Jordyn Martinez double put two runners in scoring position,
Giana Hays ripped a triple to score both.
Courtney Jack followed with a RBI of her own to make it 3-0 after one.
Martinez added to the lead in the second inning, scoring
Natasha Ochoa and
Anna Zoia-Buescher who both reached base earlier in the inning. On the runner Camille Rodrigues cruised thru the first two innings without a threat before surrendering one run in the third. After a scoreless third the Seawolves offense got going again the fourth. Hays and Jack delivered back-to-back singles and
Cassidy Romano drew a walk to load the bases.
Skylar Linnane followed with a RBI single and pinch runner
Reagan Hunt later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Eagles cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits off Rodrigues but Sonoma State would close the door in the fifth. The Seawolves scored five runs in the fifth to blow the game wide open. Ochoa led off with a single and Zoia-Buescher reached on error to get things started. Two batters later, Martinez added two more RBIs with a single to left. Hays and Jack followed with base hits of their own, scoring Martinez and making it 10-4. Linnane then added to her total with two run single through the left side to make it an eight run game.
Biola staved off the run rule in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs before the Seawolves got one back in the sixth with a bases loaded walk by Hays. The Eagles would score two more of their own in the sixth but Rodriguez finished off the game with a scoreless seventh inning to earn her second win of the season.
The 17 hits were the most since 2019 for the Seawolves as all nine starters picked up at least one. Linnane led all players in the game with four hits while also recording three RBIs. Martinez added three hits of her own and drove in four. Hays also picked up three hits, three RBIs and crossed the plate three times. The three combined for 10 hits and 10 RBIs on the day.
The Seawolves offense could not repeat in the second game, scoring two runs on six hits in a 7-2 loss to Northwest Nazarene. Both teams scored a run in the first inning as it appeared to be another slugfest underway. Zoia-Buescher and
Rylee Nishimoto led off with two straight singles before tying the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly from Jack.
NNU would add two more runs in the top of second before the Seawolves got one back in the bottom half of the third. Martinez continued her hot hitting with a double to score Zoia-Buescher and make it a 3-2 game. The Nighthawks would put the game out of reach in the fifth with a four-run inning of starter
Nichole Sarra.
