HAYWARD, Calif. – The Sonoma State track and field squad shined at the CSU East Bay Invitational on Saturday, taking home the team title with 106 points scored. The Seawolves won five individual events with
Makayla Bernadez placing first in the 200m, 400m and as a member of the 4x400 relay team.
Bernadez made her mark on the event from the start running the 400m in under one minute. She was the only athlete in the field to finish the dash in under a minute and won the finals by over three seconds with a time of 59.31. She was not finished however, taking the title in the 200m as well with a season best time of 26.14. Bernadez edged out Allison Dasilva from Modesto and SSU teammate
Nia Arceneaux in the finals who all finished with sub-27 second times. Bernadez collected 10 points for each win with Arceneaux adding six for her third-place finish.
The two Seawolves joined forces for the 4x400 with
Alex Boyle and
Katie Sheldon to shatter the team's season best time in the event. The four runners combined for a 4:11.81 finish, shaving over ten seconds off the previous best. SSU won the event by almost 25 seconds over second place Dominican to earn another 10 points.
Sydney Lopes and Sheldon added to the SSU total in the 400m hurdles, finishing first and second respectively to earn 18 total points. Lopes crossed with a time of 1:11.39 while Sheldon was right behind her at 1:11.57.
Fresh off her performance in the heptahlon at Stanislaus State yesterday
Amber Lanza matched her season best time in the 100m hurdles to finish in first place. Her time of 16.35 earned the team ten points and was their fifth win of the day.
Boyle added eight points in the 5000m, crossing at 18:57.63 and finishing just behind Aslin Taylor of the Sequoias.
Abby Ribet also earned points for the Seawolves with a time 19:22.64. Arceneaux also shined in the 100m dash, finishing second with time of 12.96 and being awarded eight more points.
On the field side,
Emma Lopez and
Haley Azevedo combined for seven points in the hammer throw. Lopez placed fifth overall with a distance of 35.29m while Azevedo was one spot behind at 34.05m.
Mia Oggenfuss continued her strong performances with a new season best in the high jump, clearing 1.55m. She topped her previous best of 1.5m set earlier this season to earn the team eight points with a second-place finish. The final points came in the long jump with Shelton jumping 4.41 to place fifth and get four points and
Brittney Glor throwing the shot put 8.89 to pick up three more points.
The Seawolves are back in action next week when they head south to participate in the Cal State LA Twilight Open and the Long Beach State Invitational.
