BERKELEY, CALIF.- Sonoma State Track & Field made the local journey to the campus of Cal Berkeley to participate in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. The Seawolves posted solid outings across a variety of events both on the field and across the track.
The Seawolves top freshman jumper, Amber Walker, was both active in the long and high jump. In the long jump she had a final mark of 5.26 meters, good for a top 10 finish in a field featuring multiple NCAA Division I opponents. In the high jump, her 1.55 meter jump would actually see Walker end up in a tie with fellow Seawolf Jazmine Severo.
In the shot put ring Ariyah Ford was highly competitive finishing just .02 meters away from a top three finish. Ford would throw a solid 13.11 meter mark and take home a fourth place finish beating out athletes from Marquette, UC Davis and Sacramento State. Fellow thrower Rebecca Hampton also secured a top 10 finish in the javelin throw thanks to a 34.94 meter toss.Â
In the 5000 meter run Sophie Rodriguez had an outstanding performance as her final time of 17:41.41 not only had her claim a first place finish but she finished roughly 11 seconds ahead of the next closest finisher! Freshman Angeline Gutierrez doubled for the day in both the mile run and 800 meter. In the mile she recorded a 5:50.87 final time and a 2:39.89 in the 800 meters. Sydney Lopes would also double on the track in the 400 meter dash and 200 meter sprint. In the 400 she was just over the 60 second mark going 62 seconds. In the 200 she finished with a time of 26.37. Alongside Lopes, Katie Sheldon represented Sonoma well in a pair of sprinting events. Sheldon was a top 16 finisher in both events with a 12.43 final time in the 100 meter dash and a 25.70 mark in the 200.
