BSB: 4 Seawolves Named to All-CCAA Teams, Most Selections Since 2017

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Tuesday, May 10th, the 2022 All-CCAA selections were announced for baseball revealing that four members of the Sonoma State baseball team earned all-conference honors with senior Joshua Medina highlighting the first team for SSU. Four all-conference selections comes as the most since the 2017 season where the Seawolves had five total selections, all honorable mention. Medina earns First Team All-CCAA for the first time since Bryce Nagata in 2018.

With a disappointing start to the season and a dim-looking future the rest of the way, head coach John Goelz and his squad picked up the pieces and regrouped to find a solid pitching rotation and rearranged the batting order to put players in better situations, yielding for better performance one thru nine. After a 4-15 overall start and a 1-8 start in conference play, the Seawolves would split three straight series before winning 9 of their next 12 games and winning three straight conference series to put themselves back in the postseason conversation. During that 12-game stretch, SSU would outscore their opponents 99-56 and SSU hitters Joshua Medina and Torreahno Sweet were at the center of that.

The Seawolves would get clutch hits and consistent offense from several players but Medina and Sweet stood out to earn all-conference honors. Medina continues to put an exclamation point on his SSU career as he stands as one of the longest tenure players on the squad, joining the program all the way back in 2018. Medina leads all consistent starters with a .337 average, .981 OPS, 60 hits, 15 2B, 32 RBI's and sits second on the team with 7 homers. His ability to hit to all fields and hit all kinds of pitches in the zone makes him one of the toughest outs in the conference. To add on to his resume, Medina acts as a short reliever/closer for the Seawolves and in his 11 appearances on the season, he leads the team with a 1.72 ERA and is tied for the conference lead with 6 saves. Medina was named a 2020 CCAA All-Star due to the shortened season but he earned his first true all-conference selection of his career this season as a utility player.

Three other Seawolves were named CCAA Honorable Mention for the first time in their SSU careers. Outfielder Torreahno Sweet has been one of the team's hottest hitters the last several weeks and currently owns a .324 batting average with 33 hits, 5 2B, and 18 RBI's. Sweet went a perfect 5-5 from the plate for a season high in hits a few weeks ago against Cal State Dominguez Hills as he has played his way into an everyday starter role. Sweet also impacts the game with his feet as he leads the team with 7 stolen bases.

Right handed pitchers Michael Benz and Jason Doktorczyk also earned honorable mention honors. Benz has bounced back and forth on the season as a lengthy reliever and a starter and has seen success in both roles. After the rotation settled down and started to gel together later in the season, Benz acted as a perfect partner for fellow pitchers Nick Roth and Tanner Fonoti. Benz has a 4.92 ERA, leads the team with 6 wins, and recorded a season high 7 innings pitched in a complete game shutout against Cal State LA, earning him CCAA Pitcher of the Week. Freshman Jason Doktorczyk came onto the scene in a big way for the Seawolves before sustaining an injury late in the season. Dok represented SSU's true ace and the big right hander got off to a hot 5-1 start, good for second most wins on the season behind Benz. Dok is the only SSU pitcher to throw 6 innings or more in a start more than three times, he currently has five different starts of 6 innings or more and recorded a season high 7 innings pitched in a 1-run complete game against Cal Poly Pomona.

Congratulations to all of the All-CCAA selections for the Sonoma State baseball team. The Seawolves take on Cal State San Bernardino in the first round of the CCAA Tournament tomorrow night, at 7:00 PM. Live stat and stream links can be found at sonomaseawolves.com.
