SANTA ROSA, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's golf team turned in their best performance at the CCAA Championships since 2019 with a wire-to-wire 3
rd place finish. The Seawolves used strong performance from
Avery Foster (8
th) and
Talia Gutman (10
th) to lead the team.
SSU opened the tournament on Monday with a round of 303 and solidly in the 3
rd spot on the leaderboard. The Seawolves finished the round just three strokes behind 2
nd place Cal State Monterey Bay and with a six-stroke lead on Cal State LA. Foster and Gutman both carded 74s in the opening round, putting them in a tie for 4
th place after 18 holes. Both golfers collected four birdies on the round to lead the team.
Brenna Ozel finished two shots behind with a 76 and
Courtney Cervellin rounded out the Sonoma State score with a 79.
On Tuesday, the Seawolves finished with a 310 team score but further cemented their spot in 3
rd place. Their six-stroke lead grew to 14 over Cal State LA but they still trailed Cal State San Marcos and Cal State LA. Foster once again led the team, this time with a 76. Ozel was one shot behind with a 77 while
Lauren Garcia and Gutman shot 78 and 79 respectively.
Sonoma State saved their best round for last, firing a final round 296 on Wednesday to finish the tournament at 909, 18 shots clear of 4
th place. Gutman led the Seawolves in the final round with an even-par-72 after birding two of the final three holes. Foster was just behind with another 74 while Ozel matched her with a 74 of her own. Cervellin provided the final number with a tournament best 76.
Foster closed out the Championship with a total score of 224, 8-over-par and broke the top-10 in her CCAA Championships debut. Gutman, the reigning CCAA Freshman of the Year also finished in the top-10 for the second straight year with a 225. Ozel was just two strokes behind in 13
th while Garcia and Cervellin placed 20
th and 21
st respectively.
The Seawolves now await their fate for the NCAA Regionals in two weeks. SSU entered the tournament ranked 12
th in the region which will see 12 total teams participate. The selection show will be held at 4:00 pm on Monday, April 29
th on
www.ncaa.com. This year's Regional will be held at Brookside Golf & Country Club in Stockton.
