ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Tuesday, April 9th, the Sonoma State women's golf team concluded their regular season as hosts in the annual SSU Spring Invite. The nine team field would compete at Foxtail Golf Club where Sonoma State hosted the historic 2023 NCAA men's golf regional. With some beautiful Sonoma County sunshine the last few days, the course was firm and fast and made for a challenging playing environment.
Just one player would record a round under par in the two day event as SSU finished day one in 4th place but just six strokes out from the top spot. Head coach
Val Verhunce would get his squad geared up for the final round as they came out with a big push, eventually taking the top spot for a portion of the day. Four different SSU golfers recorded birdies within their first two holes to jump three spots on the leaderboard.
The Seawolves posted four different statistical leaders after the final round on Tuesday as
Talia Gutman led the field in par 4 scoring at just 1-over.
Lauren Garcia finished even par in par 3 scoring to lead all golfers and
Courtney Cervellin was 2-under in par 5 scoring. SSU would fall into a tie for first and then second as the round progressed, but some late bogeys would drop them to third allowing Cal State LA and Simon Fraser to finish in a tie for first. The team's third place finish would go down as their second of the spring season.
Brenna Ozel recorded a final round of 9-over-par to finish in a tie for third place, her best individual finish of the 2024 season. Close behind were teammates
Talia Gutman and
Amelia Gladys who finished in ties for fifth place. Gladys was the top individual finisher in the field and put together a solid 74 (+2) in her final round to jump ten spots on the individual leaderboard.
Avery Foster rounded out the top-20 for SSU at 15-over-par to finish in a tie for 13th place. The complete list of Sonoma State finishers can be found below:
