CHICO, Calif- Junior
Brittany Williams tossed a four-hit shutout to lead Sonoma State to a 2-0 win in the opener of Friday's doubleheader at Chico State. The Wildcats, however, came back to take the nightcap, 6-2 and thus earned a split in the doubleheader. The Seawolves go to 15-25, 3-17 CCAA while the Wildcats move to 21-22, 9-13 CCAA.
Williams was superb in game one, yielding just four hits to the Wildcats on her way to her eighth victory of the season.
Shyrle Hawes scored the only run Sonoma would need in the first inning when she walked to lead off the game before coming around to score on a passed ball. The Seawolves added another run when
Danielle Lowe, a pinch runner for
Nicole Cordova, scored on an error by the Chico pitcher.
Like Chico, Sonoma State had four hits in the opener. The difference was that they were able to manufacture runs, taking advantage of a couple of Wildcat miscues.
The Seawolves got out to a 2-0 lead in game two before the Wildcats tied it up with a two-run Chelsea Lundberg home run. Chico won the game in the sixth inning when they scored four runs by virtue of two hits and two Sonoma State errors.
Williams started game two for the Seawolves as well, allowing six walks and four runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.
The teams will meet in another doubleheader on Saturday.
