ROHNERT PARK, Calif- In one of their best performances of the season, Sonoma State knocked off second place Cal State San Bernardino 60-47 on Friday night at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves led nearly the entire way as they improve to 6-8, 2-5 CCAA on the season. The Coyotes fall to 7-6, 5-2 CCAA.
Though one team entered at 5-1 and the other at 1-5, the teams looked very even for the first 13 minutes. Tied at 16, Sonoma pulled ahead on a
Jennifer Russo jumper and they wouldn't look back. The Seawolves squad went on to outscore the Coyotes 17-9 down the stretch to take a 33-25 halftime lead.
The Seawolves would continue their impressive play in the second half, nurturing their lead and building it 15 with eleven minutes to go. That's where it would stay the rest of the way.
Olivia Larkin and
Lauren Redfield each had 13 points to pace Sonoma State. All of Larkin's points came in the second half, when she was 5-of-6 from the field.
Michelle Gardner had eight rebounds and the Seawolves got solid play from a pair of freshmen point guard,
Roxanne Rentschler and
Jaclyn Bisordi. The duo combined for 15 points and 11 rebounds with only one turnover between them.
The Seawolves were much more careful with the ball, turning it over just nine times, their lowest figure of the season. The Coyotes, on the other hand, coughed it up 14 times.
Morgan Pryor had 11 points and seven rebounds to lead the Coyotes. Krystal Urzua, the conference's second-ranked scorer, was held to just nine points on 4-of-13 shooting.
The Seawolves will try to turn their win into a streak tomorrow night when they entertain Cal Poly Pomona.
