Peterson Lifts Seawolves To Sweep Over Pioneers

Keala Peterson was on fire Friday night against the Pioneers.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sophomore Keala Peterson had a career-high 25 kills, including 20 in just the first two sets, helping No. 17 Sonoma State to a three-set sweep of Cal State East Bay on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The win gives the Seawolves a 15-3 record overall and 7-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Pioneers fell to 3-7 in the CCAA and 5-13 overall.

Peterson had a night for the ages, especially in game one, as the 6-foot outside hitter from Sebastopol hammered in 12 kills on 18 attacks with no errors for a .667 hitting percentage to propel the Seawolves to a close first set victory 25-23; one that featured 11 tie scores and five lead changes.

Set two was just as close as the first between the two teams, but the Seawolves overcame 10 unforced errors, 12 tie scores and another five lead changes to take the 25-22 set win and the 2-0 match lead. Peterson, again, was the offensive leader, notching eight kills. Senior Rikki Buckshnis contributed four kills for the Seawolves in the second set.

Cal State East Bay then stayed close with Sonoma State to start the third set but an all-around effort by the Seawolves, including 15 kills and no errors (.536), proved to be too much as they took the three-set victory after the 25-15 win in set three. Peterson accounted for more than half of the Seawolves' kills (49), hitting at an even .500 clip. Sonoma State, as a team, hit .306 to the Pioneers' .195 hitting percentage.

Freshman Ally Sather chipped in with nine kills and Buckshnis ended the night with six. Senior setter Lindsay Brown had a game-high 39 assists and sophomore Taylor Krenwinkel once again led the Seawolf back line with 15 digs.

Ariel Ajagu led Cal State East Bay with nine kills and Lauren Massa had 15 digs.

Sonoma State will return to the court on Saturday to take on UC San Diego, beginning at 7 p.m. The Tritons (17-1, 9-1 CCAA), ranked third in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, swept Humboldt State on Friday night in Arcata.

Box Score: #17 Sonoma State 3, Cal State East Bay 0
