Volleyball Falls In Three Sets At UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif- Sophomore Keala Peterson pounded 11 kills but 23 by UC San Diego's Sylvia Schmidt helped the Tritons to a three-set sweep of the Seawolves on Friday night at the RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. With the loss, Sonoma State falls to 22-7 overall and 14-7 in the CCAA. The Tritons, ranked fourth in the nation, improved to 27-2 and 19-2.

UC San Diego led from start to finish in the opening set with the help of Schmidt and her seven kills and 15 assists from Elaine Chen. Peterson and freshman Ally Sather combined for six kills but the Seawolves were held to a .121 hitting percentage as the Tritons won set one, 25-19.

In the second set, UC San Diego scored the first five points but Sonoma State rallied back to tie the set up at 8-8 but another four point run by the Tritons gave them a comfortable cushion until the Seawolves fought back to within one at 23-22. However, a kill by Katie Condon and Schmidt gave UCSD the 2-0 match lead with the 25-22 victory in the second frame.

The third set went back and forth for quite a while, as both teams fought through eight ties and four lead changes but a five point run late in the set gave UC San Diego a 18-11 lead. Sonoma State faced match point at 24-20 but reeled off three straight points to close the lead to just one but a block by Julia Freidenberg and Chen gave the Tritons their 25th point and the three-set sweep.

Peterson's aforementioned 11 kills led the Seawolves as senior Ali Walker had eight. Senior Lindsay Brown had 27 assists while sophomore Taylor Krenwinkel recorded her 37th consecutive match with at least double-digit digs -- dating back to last season -- grabbing a team-high 10 digs on Friday night.

UC San Diego's Hillary Williamson added 11 kills with the help of Chen's 48 assists. Roxanne Brunsting added a game-high 19 digs for the Tritons.

Sonoma State will wrap up its regular season schedule on Saturday at Cal State East Bay. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Following Saturday's match, the Seawolves, ranked third in the NCAA Division II West Region poll released on Thursday, will then await word on its postseason fate. The NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship Selection Show will stream live online Sunday at www.ncaa.com at 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. The top eight (8) teams from each region will make up the 64-team tournament with the championship match to take place on Dec. 5 at a site to be named later.
