Jaclyn Bisordi dropped in a career-high 20 points but Western Washington pulled away late in the second half to steal a 66-58 victory in the final game of the GNAC/CCAA Crossover Challenge on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium on Monday afternoon in Bellingham, Wash. The Seawolves fell below .500 at 4-5 on the season and the Vikings improved to 8-1.
A three-pointer by senior
Stephanie Barnes with 9:42 left in regulation gave the Seawolves a 48-47 lead, but Western Washington went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to pull away from Sonoma State for good, who has lost its fourth straight game.
In the first half, the Seawolves played toe-to-toe with the Vikings as both teams fought through eight ties and nine lead changes in the opening 20 minutes of play. Bisordi went off for 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including three three-pointers. Both teams were an identical 11-for-26 from the floor and went into the intermission tied at 31-31.
The Seawolves held Western Washington's main scoring threat, Jessica Sommers, to zero points in the first half. Sommers was coming off the highest back-to-back scoring performances in WWU history, pouring in 65 points in two games at last week's Great Western Shootout in Las Vegas, including a 37-point showing against Washburn on Thursday. The Vikings relied on Amanda Dunbar's six points in the opening period.
After both teams went back and forth for the first ten minutes of the second half (four ties and five lead changes), Sommers emerged as the scoring threat she's known to be, scoring all 17 of her team-high points in the final period as the Vikings finally pulled away for the narrow eight point victory. Sonoma State cooled off in the final period, shooting 38.5 percent from the floor (10-26) to Western Washington's 47.8 percent on just 11-of-23 shooting.
Bisordi was held to just six points in the final 20 minutes, ending with the aforementioned career-high of 20 points. Fellow sophomore
Christy Shreve also scored in double-figures for Sonoma State with 10. Western Washington had a slight advantage on the glass (32-31) as Lauren Hefflin pulled down 11 of them -- nine in the first half -- for the Vikings. Both teams forced 17 turnovers.
It was announced following the conclusion of Monday's game that Bisordi was named to the All-Tournament team.
Sonoma State will take a break from basketball action for the holidays before returning to conference play on Jan. 2 at San Francisco State. The Seawolves and the Gators will tipoff from the Main Gymnasium in San Francisco at 5:30 p.m.
