STANFORD, Calif- The Sonoma State water polo team played tough in the first half against mighty Stanford before being outscored 8-1 in the second, losing to the Cardinal 19-7 Saturday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Stanford jetted out to a 2-0 lead on a penalty shot from Kelly Eaton and an even-strength score from Jessica Stevens. Sonoma would hang tough though and answer back with goals by
Andrea Brookbank and
Samantha Mullins to close the Cardinal lead to 3-2.
The Cardinal would make another run however, as Cassie Churnside, Melissa Seidemann and Eaton all posted goals over a span of 1:57 over the end of the first and beginning of the second period to make it 6-2.
Sonoma State would claw back and make it 9-6, before Stanford eventually took over the game going on a 8-1 run in the second half.
