Water Polo Drops Two Matches At Aggie Invitational

Emily Pearce netted three goals in a close loss to Cal State Bakersfield
DAVIS, Calif- The Sonoma State women's water polo team dropped both of their matches Saturday afternoon at the Aggie Shootout hosted by UC Davis, falling in game one to the host Aggies, 17-8, and losing to Cal State Bakersfield, 9-7. The two defeats for Sonoma State drop their record to 4-7 on the year.

In game one, Sonoma was able to stay competitive against UC Davis, trailing 7-6 at halftime. The Seawolves lead 5-3 midway through the second quarter, as Laurel Stricklin netted her first of two goals in the second period. The lead was short lived however, as UC Davis went on a 4-1 surge to close the first half.

Twelve seconds into the third quarter, The Aggies cashed in on a man-up situation and never looked back, scoring the next five goals to put the lead out of reach at 13-6. UC Davis would tack on four more in the fourth, and outscore Sonoma in the second half by a 10-2 margin.

Stricklin lead the way for the Seawolves in the scoring department, netting three goals.

Sonoma's upset bid of Cal State Bakersfield fell just short in game two, as the Roadrunners used a 7-5 run in the second half to secure the 9-7 victory.

The Seawolves did not light up the scoreboard until the second quarter, as Brooke Smith slipped on past Roadrunner goalkeeper Veronica Campbell, evening the score at 1-1. Cal State Bakersfield would answer immediately with a penalty shot goal by Amanda Ortiz. Both teams would head into the half tied 2-2, as the Seawolves Emily Pearce notched a goal with twenty-six seconds remaining.

After both teams scored early in the third, the Roadrunners ripped of three straight goals to secure a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Sonoma would storm back with four goals of their own in the fourth, but could not hold up defensively against Cal State Bakersfield, allowing three goals in the final period. Pacing Sonoma State was Pearce, who posted three goals. Lysa Lombard collected eleven saves for Sonoma State in goal.

Sonoma will look to rebound at the Loyola Marymount Tournament next weekend. The Seawolves are scheduled for four matches, two each on Mar. 14 and Mar. 15.
