Volleyball Stopped By No. 2 CSU San Bernardino

Lindsay Brown broke the school's all-time service aces record on Saturday.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif-  Sonoma State's upset attempt against last year's national runner-up and this year's No. 2 ranked team started out well, but Cal State San Bernardino got its game in gear to defeat the Seawolves 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at RIMAC Arena in San Bernardino.  The loss sends the 15th-ranked Seawolves to 13-2, 5-2 CCAA.  The Coyotes improve to 14-0, 7-0 CCAA.

In the match, senior Lindsay Brown, already the school's leader in career assists, broke the record for service aces in a career.  The Napa native now has 131 service aces in her four-year career, which surpasses the record of 130, set by Taylor Manton in 2007.

The Seawolves took the first five points of set No. 1 on their way to an early 16-8 lead.  They would hold on for a 25-19 victory, thanks to the strong play of Keala Peterson and Ally Sather, who had five kills each.

Sonoma would lead late in set two (19-18) before the Coyotes reeled off four straight points to go up 22-19.  They would win the set and even the match up at one with a 25-23 victory.

Though they would keep it close until the end, the Seawolves never led in set three as the Coyotes gained some momentum with a 25-22 victory.

That momentum would carry over in to set four as the Coyotes raced out to an 11-3 advantage and never looked back.  The final score would be 25-18, giving CSUSB their 21st straight home victory dating back to the start of the 2008 season.

Sather and Peterson combined for 37 of the Seawolves' 51 kills. Sather took game-high honors with 19 and Peterson posted 18.  Lindsay Brown had 41 assists and Taylor Krenwinkel went for 15 digs.

Jane Chafeh came up big for the Coyotes, leading all players with 23 kills and a .396 hitting percentage.  CSUSB would out hit Sonoma .273 to .223 for the match.

The Seawolves return home next weekend to face Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.

Box Score: #2 Cal State San Bernardino 3, #15 Sonoma State 1
