Box Score: #14 Western Washington 73, Sonoma State 60
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Freshman
Kristina Fahey led Sonoma State with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, but 14th-ranked Western Washington sprinted to an early 10-0 lead and never looked back, en route to a 73-60 win over the host Seawolves on Saturday night in the final game of the CCAA/GNAC Challenge. It was the fourth straight loss for SSU, as it falls to 3-4 overall. The Vikings improve to 6-1.
It took a little bit longer for the Seawolves to get going, surrendering the first 10 points of the game to the Vikings, but a layup by Fahey at the 16:31 mark put Sonoma State on the scoreboard. Western Washington then scored the next four points to take a 12 point lead. The WWU lead bounced between eight and 10 points, but SSU pulled to within seven points at 23-16 midway through the second half.
The nationally-ranked team from Bellingham, Wash. stretched its lead to 34-19 at the five minute mark and eventually took a 14-point lead (40-26) at halftime.
The lead remained at 10 or more points for most of the second half until a three pointer by
Aly Henington put the Seawolves down nine at 50-41 with 13:45 remaining in the game. It would be as close as Sonoma State would get the rest of the way, as the Vikings ran off with the 73-60 victory, bouncing back from an overtime loss against No. 17 Chico State the night before.
Fahey scored a career-high 13 points, leading two others who scored in double-figures.
Jaclyn Bisordi, who earned All-Tournament honors this weekend, scored 11 points and
Taylor Vigil chipped in with 10. The team hit 39 percent from the floor on 23-of-59 shooting, while Western Washington hit just under 50 percent at 49.1 (27-55).
Four Vikings scored in double-figures, led by the 17 points of Lauren Hefflin, who also earned All-Tournament Team honors. Megan Pinske (13), Gabby Wade (12) and Erika Ramstead (10) led the Vikings. Wade corralled a game-high nine rebounds in the victory.
Sonoma State will travel to Hayward on Dec. 19 to face Cal State East Bay at 2 p.m.
