Baseball Snaps Four-Game Losing Streak In Split

Max Shupe had two home runs on Saturday against the Coyotes.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif- Falling in an offensive showdown in game one, 14-11, Sonoma State scored four runs in the fourth inning and added five in the sixth inning to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday after a 9-5 victory in game two over host Cal State San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field. The 15th-ranked Seawolves move above .500 with the win, going to 6-5 overall and earning their first CCAA victory (1-2). The Coyotes lost their first conference game, falling to 6-2 (6-1 CCAA).

The nightcap looked as if it might turn into another offensive show when the Coyotes put up five runs in the bottom half of the third inning on four hits and two defensive errors by Sonoma State fielders. However, the Seawolves came right back in their next offensive chance, scoring four runs on a RBI single by Kyle Jones, a RBI double by Austin Hogans and a two-run home run by Max Shupe to close the gap to 5-4.

Sonoma State starting pitcher Thomas Lee then retired six of the next seven Coyote batters before the Seawolves opened up another huge inning -- a five run inning with just one hit. Cal State San Bernardino used three different pitchers in the inning due to three walks, two hit batsmen and an error that stretched the Seawolf half of the sixth inning. When all was said and done, and the Seawolves basically walked around the bases, Sonoma State held a 9-5 lead.

After giving up a walk, Lee was relived by Brian Flint, who came on for the final two innings to grab his third save this season. In his five-plus innings on the mount, Lee scattered six hits, gave up five runs (four earned) and struck out four. Flint didn't give up a hit in his two innings of work, striking out one.

Jones went 2-for-3 in the second game with three RBI. Hogans and Shupe both added two hits in the victory as well.

In the opener, a combined six home runs were launched between the two teams, with just two coming from the Seawolves offense. Shupe homered in the third inning and Joey Parigi went yard in the sixth, helping Sonoma State score 11 runs, Cal State San Bernardino exploded for 13 runs over a four-inning span that proved to be the difference.

SSU starter Scott Alexander didn't get much help defensively in his four innings of work, as he gave up six runs, only two of which were earned.

Parigi had three hits in the opener and brought home four runs in the loss. Hogans and Shupe again had two hits for the Seawolves.

Sonoma State will wrap up its four-game series with the Coyotes on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
