Sonoma Splits Opening Day Of Seawolf Splash

Kyleigh Shea put in two goals for Sonoma State.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State struck first, but from then on UC Davis dialed in defensively, defeating the Seawolves 20-7. Kyleigh Shea led the Seawolves in scoring with two goals, but Sonoma State struggled against a tough Aggie defense. Sonoma State falls to 2-9 on the season with all loses coming at the hands of ranked opponents while No. 15 UC Davis improves to 5-5.

After a slow start, Sonoma spilled first blood on a Lindsay Rangel goal, but it didn't take long for the Aggies to respond. Only thirteen seconds later, Jessica Dunn put UC Davis on the board to end the Seawolves brief lead. This would be the last time the Seawolves were in striking distance with the Aggies. After an 8-3 UC Davis first quarter lead, the Aggies quickly applied intense pressure on the Seawolves who were shutout in the second quarter. To add to Sonoma's woes, the Aggies continued to pile on the goals, taking a 12-3 lead into halftime.

The second half looked just as bleak for the Seawolves as again UC Davis came out forcing the Seawolves to earn every look they attempted. Shea converted on two second half attempts in what became a battle between the two reserves. Even in the final minutes, the Aggies continued to harass the Seawolves defensively.

Six different players scored for Sonoma, including Laurel Stricklin and Emily Pearce who had four goals apiece in Sonoma's first match earlier today. Sarah Rosenthal and Brooke Smith split the two assists for the Seawolves. Gina Uliana had ten saves in the match.

On the other side of the pool, the Aggies were led by Rachel Smith, who pounded in six goals to lead all scorers. Jessica Dunn added four of her own as the scoring tandem provided half of the Aggies point total. UC Davis, much like Sonoma in the first match, got contributions from the entire roster as ten different Aggies scored.

Sonoma State will continue its run in the Seawolf Splash as well as looking for its first win against a ranked team tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. against  No. 19 Cal State East Bay.
