Holly Armijo scored three goals and
Gina Uliana made a season-high 12 saves helping Sonoma State win its first match of the 2010 season, 8-6, over the University of Redlands on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up the Triton Invitational in which the Seawolves finished 1-3 this past weekend. Sunday afternoon's match was the first against an opponent not ranked in the Women's Collegiate Water Polo Top 20 poll, as the Seawolves move to 1-7 on the year.
Redlands jumped ahead 2-1 in the early going, but Sonoma State scored four goals in the second period to take the 5-4 lead into the third period of play. The Seawolves then scored three more in the third period, surrendering just one goal to hold a 8-5 lead. SSU was held scoreless in the the final frame; however, Redlands only managed one more goal as the Seawolves grabbed the 8-6 win.
Armijo had five steals to go with her team-leading three goals.
Lindsay Rangel had two assists.
In the earlier match Sunday, Sonoma State tangled with No. 16 Indiana, but fell 15-6.
Laurel Stricklin scored three goals for the Seawolves in the loss as Uliana made six saves. It was the third time in eight games that Stricklin lead SSU in goals.
Sonoma State will return to the pool on Saturday to take on top-ranked Stanford. Match time is set for 10 a.m. in Stanford.
