ROHNERT PARK, Calif- No-hit for five innings, the Sonoma State offense snapped to life in the sixth to come from behind and take game two of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay, 6-2, completing a twinbill sweep of the Otters. The Seawolves took game one in blowout fashion, 15-1. The Seawolves improve to 12-14, 5-10 CCAA while the Otters drop to 5-23, 1-18 CCAA.
GAME ONE: Seawolves Explode In Late Innings For Big Win
The Seawolves started fairly slow in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring once in the second, to take a 1-0 lead into the fourth. A
Max Shupe leadoff home run would then set the tone for a four-run inning that pushed the margin to 5-0.
The Otters would get their only run in the top of the fifth, on a solo shot from Alex Mangubat. After that, it would be all Seawolves.
A double by
Bobby Cozine and a walk to
Randy Wells set up a two-run single by
Ryan Stevens that made it 7-1. The score became 8-1 when
Joey Parigi singled home a run later in the inning. Over the next five innings, the Seawolves would score at least two runs in each, pushing the lead from 8-1 all the way to the final margin of 15-1.
Joining Shupe with a home run was
Chad Inderwiesche, who skied a two-run blast to in the eighth to cap the Seawolves' outburst.
Stevens and
Erik Hansen each finished 3-for-3 in the game. Cozine was 3-for-5 and five different Seawolves had at least two runs batted in.
Kendall Davis, making just his second start of the season, pitched well, striking out six and walking just one in five innings of work. He got the win to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Jarrod Dumont turned in an overpowering relief appearance, striking out eight in four innings of shutout work.
Joey Friedman was the lone Otter with more than one hit, finishing the game 2-for-4. Thadd McAlpin was tagged with the loss, allowing five earned runs in four innings of work.
GAME TWO: Seawolves Bust Out Of Slump With Six-Run Sixth
For five innings in game two, it appeared that the Seawolves had used up all of their offense in the game one rout. Held without a hit through five in a great performance by Otter starter Justin Aguilera, the Seawolves finally break through in the sixth.
That they were just two runs back heading into the sixth was thanks in large part to a solid outing from starter
Thomas Lee. Lee went the distance, giving up six hits, striking out five, and allowing just one earned run.
The sixth inning got started with a walk to
Erik Hansen, the first of the game issued by Aguilera. Following a single by
Steven Filippi,
Kyle Jones drew a walk to load the bases. Cozine then hit into a fielder's choice, scoring the Seawolves' first run of the game.
Trailing 2-1, but with two runners on and just one out,
Max Shupe stepped to the plate and after getting behind 0-2, he blasted an absolute bomb to left field that cleared the bases and put Sonoma up 4-2. Runs would follow on a double by
Austin Hogans and a single by
Joey Parigi and when the dust settled, six runs had crossed the plate.
The six-run outburst gave Lee more than enough cushion to close out the game and earn his third win of the season.
The Seawolves would finish the game with just five hits, all by different hitters.
Cal State Monterey Bay managed six hits, two of them off the bat of reserve Thomas George.
