SANTA CLARA, Calif- After holding a 4-3 lead going into the final period, Sonoma State surrendered three goals to Cal State San Bernardino in the last eight minutes, as the Coyotes defeated the Seawolves in a low-scoring affair, 6-5, on Sunday at The Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara University. The Seawolves then made a furious comeback attempt against the Broncos in the final match of the day, but came up short, 8-7. Sonoma State falls to 6-25 overall headed into the final match of the regular season on Saturday against Cal State Monterey Bay.
Cal State San Bernardino 6, Sonoma State 5
After a 3-2 disadvantage after the first half of play, Sonoma State scored two goals in the third period to grab the 4-3 lead.
Cal State San Bernardino then outscored the Seawolves 3-1 in the final period to take the narrow 6-5 victory.
Laurel Stricklin scored two goals for Sonoma State and
Holly Armijo,
Kelsey Lowy and
Lindsay Rangel added goals in the match.
Kelsey Goode made seven saves in the cage for SSU.
With two goals scored, Stricklin became Sonoma State's all-time leader in career goals with 188. The previous record was 187, held by Amanda Haddock (2004-06).
Santa Clara 8, Sonoma State 7
In the final game of the two-day, 16-match tournament, the host Broncos held a 6-1 lead after 16 minutes, but Sonoma State made a huge comeback in the final two periods, scoring six goals, however Santa Clara scored two insurance goals in the same span to hold off for the 8-7 win.
Armijo had three goals for the Seawolves in the final match, while Stricklin (2),
Emily Pearce and
Brooke Smith all scored as well.
Gina Uliana made eight saves.
Sonoma State will wrap up the 2010 regular season on Saturday in hosting Cal State Monterey Bay at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool. First sprint is scheduled for Noon.
