Palermo Powers No. 12 Seawolves To Saturday Sweep

Ali Palermo blasted three home runs in the sweep on Saturday.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Ali Palermo hit three home runs and had six RBI on the day, including a game-winning three run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two to help 12th-ranked Sonoma State to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Cal State Stanislaus, 4-1 and 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field. The Seawolves, who are ranked third in the latest NCAA Division II West Region poll, improves to 31-8 overall and 17-5 in the CCAA. The Warriors fall to 8-27-1 (3-19 CCAA).

#12 Sonoma State 4, Cal State Stanislaus 1

The Warriors wasted no time putting a run up on the scoreboard in the opener on a double by Jennifer Arnold that scored Sarah Locarnini. However, Seawolf starter Julianne Martinez settled down and held Cal State Stanislaus to just two hits the rest of the game in earning the victory and improving to 14-4 this season. Martinez walked four and struck out three in seven innings of work.

As for the Sonoma State offense, the Seawolves couldn't get anything going against Arnold, who started the game for the Warriors, pitching just two innings and giving up three hits. Brittani Weatherford relieved Arnold in the third and surrendered a two run double to Kayla Ledford, putting the Seawolves ahead 2-1.

An inning later, Palermo hit the first of her three home runs on the day with a two run shot to left field, scoring herself and LeeAnn Stroud, who walked earlier in the inning, for the 4-1 Sonoma State lead and the eventual winning score.

Ledford had two hits and two RBI to pace the Seawolves along with Palermo's aforementioned home run. Sonoma State finished the game with seven hits to Cal State Stanislaus' three.

#12 Sonoma State 6, Cal State Stanislaus 3

In the nightcap, the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first three and a half innings before the Seawolves found their offensive stride once again. Locarnini doubled home two runs in the second for Cal State Stanislaus then Brittany Balanesi scored on a single by Erica McIntyre for the Warriors first three runs.

The Seawolves cut the Warrior lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth on Palermo's second home run of the day, a solo shot to left field. Ashley Britton then scored on a passed ball by Warrior catcher Cassandra Carlos, narrowing the gap to 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Carli Feuerbach had a pinch-hit RBI single down the right field line, scoring Ledford, who led off the inning with a double to right center, knotting the score at three apiece. A couple of batters later, Palermo sent the game-winning deep ball over the left field fence, giving the Seawolves the eventual 6-3 victory over Cal State Stanislaus.

Samantha Lipperd went the distance for Sonoma State, scattering seven hits and giving up three runs (one earned), while striking out 10 Warrior batters. Offensively, Rochelle Vanyi went 2-for-3 and Britton scored two runs for the Seawolves.

Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus will take a two day hiatus before returning to Rohnert Park to complete the four game series on Tuesday with a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m.
