Women's Water Polo Upends Otters After Late Run

SEASIDE, Calif- Down 8-7 with under four minutes remaining, Brooke Smith scored the equalizer with 3:52 remaining in the match and Emily Pearce sealed the deal with a score at the 1:58 mark to give Sonoma State the 9-8 victory over WWPA-rival Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon at the CSUMB Aquatic Center. The Seawolves rise to 6-21 overall and 3-8 in conference play.

After a 3-3 tie after the opening half, both teams turned up the offensive heat in the third period, but it was the Seawolves who grabbed the 7-6 lead going into the final period of play, including two goals by Smith.

In the fourth, Cal State Monterey Bay scored two quick goals to go up by one at 8-7. After a timeout by Sonoma State, the Seawolves regained composure and Smith netted the equalizer, knotting the score at eight. Then, Pearce took possession of the ball and rifled it past Otter netminder Christina Vournas for the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning goal.

Smith led the way for the Seawolves with three goals. Pearce, Kelsey Lowy and Lindsay Rangel also added two goals apiece for Sonoma State. Gina Uliana made eight saves in the cage.

Sonoma State will compete in the Bronco Invitational at Santa Clara University beginning Saturday with matches against Cal State Bakersfield (8 a.m.) and UC San Diego (2:15 p.m.). The Seawolves will wrap up the Bronco on Sunday against Cal State San Bernardino (11:45 a.m.) and host Santa Clara (4:45 p.m.) before returning home in the season finale against Cal State Monterey Bay on Apr. 17.
