ROHNERT PARK, Calif- For the second game in the row, the Sonoma State softball team couldn't get anything going on offense as Dixie State's Lauren Folta allowed just one hit, helping the Red Storm to a 8-0 victory in the loser-out game of the NCAA Division II West Regional at Seawolf Field. The Seawolves, who had arguably the best season in program history, ended 2010 with a 43-18 record. Dixie State will face Chico State on Sunday in the championship game. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
After a leadoff single to
Simone Brandalise, Folta cruised right through the Seawolf batting order, retiring 14 straight before walking
Carli Feuerbach in the fifth.
Kayla Ledford was then hit by the pitch, putting runners on first and second. Folta ended the threat, though, striking out
Jesse Talaugon to end the fifth.
Up 7-0 in the bottom half of the fifth, Dixie State loaded the bases on
Samantha Lipperd, who relieved
Julianne Martinez in the fourth. Lipperd hit Anna Cue in the helmet, allowing the winning run to cross the plate in the eight-run mercy rule.
The Red Storm scored two runs in the first inning and added two more in the third. A couple of singles, a double and a successful steal of home plate put Dixie State up 7-0 heading into the fifth and what would be the final inning.
Folta (20-7) allowed just the one hit to Brandalise, walked one and struck out two. Martinez (21-9) got tagged with the loss after tossing three innings, scattering nine hits and allowing six runs. She walked one and struckout three.
Breanna Egge led the way for the Red Storm with three hits and two runs scored. Shantae Hunter, Bailie Hicken and Johnna Brown had two hits apiece for Dixie State, who had 12 total in the ballgame.
Sonoma State wraps up its 2010 campaign at 43-18 after breaking several offensive records, including home runs (51).
