FRESNO, Calif- Former Sonoma State University student-athlete Ryan Carter, who helped the Seawolves men's golf team to a national championship in 2009 and a fourth place finish in the national tournament this past spring, has qualified for the oldest and most coveted amateur golf championship tournaments in the United States – the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Carter, a native of Stockton, carded a 136 in the 36-hole qualifying tournament at Fort Washington Golf and Country Club in Fresno last week. A total of 41 golf courses held amateur qualifying tournaments around the country and 123 golfers made the cut, as numerous others were named alternates.

This year's U.S. Amateur Championship will be held at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. -- the site of the 2015 U.S. Open Championship – on Aug. 23-29. Carter and the rest of the field will be vying for the title in which many big name golfers have won in the past, including Tiger Woods, who won the tournament three times between 1994 and 1996.

Many other great names of professional golf have claimed the Havemeyer Cup since the tournament started in 1895, such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Craig Stadler, Mark O'Meara and Phil Mickelson.

Carter had a season-best second place finish at the NCAA Division II West/Central Regional Championship at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, shooting an even par 216, two strokes behind former teammate Janssen Todd, who earned medalist honors.
