Water Polo Drops Two At UCSB Winter Invitational

Natalie DelCarlo scored four goals to lead the Seawolves on Saturday.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif- Rebounding from a devastating 24-3 loss to San Diego State in the first of four games for Sonoma State at the UCSD Winter Invitational, the Seawolves mounted a furious comeback in the final period against Concordia, but fell just one goal shy in the 11-10 loss in SSU's second game of the day. Sonoma State falls to 1-5 this season.

In Sonoma State's Saturday opener, the Seawolves struggled early, falling behind 10-1 in the first period to 11th-ranked San Diego State and the Aztecs never looked back, crusing to a 24-3 win in game number three of the day at Recreation Center Pool. Natalie DelCarlo was Sonoma State's leading goal scorer, netting two of the three goals. Kyleigh Shea recorded the other Seawolf goal.

Looking to bounce back and split the two matches of the day, Sonoma State went into the fourth period trailing 11-7 to Concordia. The Seawolves would go on to score three goals to come within a goal, all while the defense held strong, but the comeback fell just short, losing 11-10.

Kelsey Lowy led the way with three goals, followed by the two goals of DelCarlo and Malina Lorring. Jessica Stansfield, Lindsay Rangel and Shea also added scores in the nailbiting one-goal defeat.

Sonoma State will open up Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play on Sunday, when the Seawolves take on UC San Diego at 8 a.m. during day two of the UCSB Winter Invite. SSU will then wrap up the tournament against Vanguard at 1:50 p.m.
