BOX SCORE: Sonoma State 3, #23 Chico State 0
CHICO, Calif-
Ally Sather became the fourth player in Sonoma State volleyball history to reach 1,000 career kills and
Kelsey Hull slammed a match-high 15 balls to the hardwood, en route to a three-set sweep (26-24, 25-19, 25-17) over 23rd-ranked Chico State on Saturday night at Art Acker Gymnasium in Chico. The Seawolves improve to 15-3 this season with a near perfect 12-1 record in the CCAA. The Wildcats lost their second match in as many nights, falling to 14-5 overall and 9-4 in conference play.
Sonoma State fired on all cylinders in Saturday's win, outhitting Chico State (.314 to .182). It was the play of Hull that propelled the Seawolves to their fifth straight win, as the redshirt freshman recorded 15 kills on 28 swings, erring just twice for a .464 hitting percentage.
Keala Peterson racked up nine kills and
Regan Richert chipped in with seven kills.
Taylor Krenwinkel led all defenders with 11 digs as Peterson recorded another double-double with 10 digs.
It was a battle between the second and third place teams in the CCAA right from the get-go. Nine ties and five lead changes were featured in the opening set. After a narrow 5-4 lead in favor of Sonoma, Chico reeled off six straight points to take a 10-5 lead. However, the Seawolves would chip away at the lead, eventually stealing the lead back at 16-15. But the hosts punched right back, scoring five of the next six points to lead 20-17 and force a SSU timeout. The Seawolves would score right out of the timeout, which evidently was Sather's 1,000th career kill to cut the Wildcat lead down to two at 20-18. Several moments later when it looked like Chico would control the rest of the set with a 23-19 lead, Sonoma went on a 7-1 run to win the opening set 26-24.
The second set saw 10 more ties and five more lead changes, but after Chico State knotted the set at 17-17 with a kill by Lindsay Quigley, Sonoma State tallied six straight points to pull ahead at 23-17. Both teams would trade points after that, but a kill by Hull put the Seawolves in the driver's seat of the match with a 25-19 win.
With a 2-0 lead in the match, Sonoma State came out on fire, sprinting to a 8-2 lead. The Seawolves would remain in control the rest of the way, cruising to the match-clinching 25-17 win in the third set.
Chico State was led by Jacqueline Johnson, who hammered nine kills and sported a .429 hitting percentage. Quigley added seven kills with a .583 clip. It would be the extent of Chico's weapons, though, allowing Sonoma State to earn its eighth straight road victory.
Sonoma State will wrap up its season-long five-match road trip on Wednesday when the Seawolves travel north to Arcata to face Humboldt State. SSU will then return home on Friday to host Cal State East Bay at 7:00 p.m. in The Wolves' Den.
