Keala Peterson hit at a blazing .438 clip with 15 kills and
Kelsey Hull slammed 10 kills to the court, leading 24th-ranked Sonoma State to a quick three-set victory (25-15, 25-15, 25-19) over host Humboldt State on Wednesday night at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata. The Seawolves (16-3, 13-1 CCAA) have won 13 straight road matches, dating back to last season, while the Lumberjacks fall to 6-12 overall and 3-11 in conference play.
Peterson recorded double-digit kills for the 15th time in 19 matches this season. She blasted a match-high 15 kills with just one error in 32 attacks. Hull posted her 12th-career double-digit kill performance, hitting .292 with three errors on 24 swings.
Ally Sather chipped in with nine kills and hit .318, boosting the Seawolves to a .317 hitting percentage while holding the 'Jacks to just a .126 clip.
Hayley Ross passed out 37 assists and
Taylor Krenwinkel had a team-high 11 digs.
Nicole Gragnola also had double-digit digs, defending 10 attacks.
After two straight points by Sonoma State to open the match, Humboldt State came back to knot the first set at 2-2. However, the Seawolves began to pull away slowly but surely. The Lumberjacks got back to within two points at 10-8, but SSU eventually extended its lead to as much as 11 points and cruised to the 25-15 win in the opening frame.
The second set was by far the closest set of the match, as the two teams endured 11 ties and seven lead changes. Humboldt State would force its last tie at 15-15 and Sonoma State went on to score ten straight points and win the second set, 25-15.
In the third set, the Seawolves led from start to finish, despite the 'Jacks getting to within two points at 21-19. However, a kill from Hull and
Brooke Moore as well as two kills by Peterson put the match away with the 25-19 win and the 3-0 match victory.
Humboldt State's Oceana Matsubu led the hosts with ten of the 29 kills by HSU. Ashley Neale led all defenders with 15 digs while Brooke Ferguson had 11 digs.
Sonoma State will return home to the friendly confines of The Wolves' Den on Friday after wrapping up the season-long five-match road trip on Wednesday. The Seawolves will host Cal State East Bay on Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. Both matches are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
