It was extremely close in the first set, as both teams endured 16 tie scores and four lead changes. No team lead by more than one point until Sonoma State grabbed a 14-12 lead. However, Cal Poly Pomona would tie it back up -- several more times -- before taking a three point lead at 20-17. The Seawolves would come right back, though, scoring seven of the set's next eight points to force set point at 24-21. Two straight Bronco points induced a Seawolf timeout, but Sather would put it away on the next rally with a kill to give SSU the 25-23 win and the 1-0 match lead.
The second set again was close, but the Seawolves held the lead for much of the set. The Broncos got to within two points at 20-18, but Sonoma State finally pulled away late for the 25-21 win and the 2-0 lead.
After the 10-minute intermission, Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third frame, later extending it to 9-3. Sonoma State would rally to tie the set at 14-14, 15-15 and 16-16, but the hosts would grab the lead again and would hold set point at 24-21. The Seawolves would rally, though, scoring the next four points to lead 25-24. The set would get knotted at 26-26 before the Broncos finally scored the next to points to cut into SSU's match lead at 2-1.
