SAN FRANCISCO-
Ally Sather,
Keala Peterson and
Kelsey Hull combined for 34 of Sonoma State's 44 kills to sprint past San Francisco State in three sets, including a five-point rally after trailing 24-21 in the third set. The Seawolves improve to 13-3 and 10-1 in conference play with the 25-20, 25-13, 26-24 victory over the Gators, who fall to 10-7 and 6-6 in the CCAA.
Sonoma State has hit the midway point of the conference schedule, only losing to third-ranked Cal State San Bernardino, which remains undefeated at 16-0 and 11-0 this season. It continues to be the best conference start in school history. With 11 matches remaining in the regular season, the Seawolves will look to continue their winning ways and qualify for the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight year.
With only four tie scores and two lead changes, Sonoma State controlled most of the match from start to finish.. San Francisco State, after surrendering the first point of the match, came back to tie the opening set at 1-1. The Seawolves would pull back into the lead and would hold on to it for the 25-20 win, despite close resistence by the Gators.
The second set was all Sonoma State. After a quick 3-0 start and a 6-4 lead, the Seawolves scored nine straight points to lead 15-4, inducing two Gator timeouts during that stretch. The lead extended to 21-9 before Sonoma State could grab the 2-0 match lead with a convincing 25-13 win in the second set.
The Seawolves would again grab a large lead to open the third set, jumping to a 12-4 lead. However, the Gators would chip away at the lead and trail by just five points at 14-9. SSU would score two points to extend the lead the 16-9, but SFSU went on a seven point run to knot the set at 16-16.
Sonoma State settled down and regained a three-point lead after three straight points, but SF State again rallied for five consecutive points to lead 21-19. Both teams traded points until the hosts eventually held set point at 24-21. Two straight kills by Sather forced San Francisco State to call a timeout, even though the Gators still lead 24-23. It didn't freeze the Seawolves' rhythm as a Gator ball handling error, a kill by
Brooke Moore and a service ace by
Hayley Ross gave the Seawolves the come-from-behind 26-24 win and the 3-0 match win.
Sather led all players, blasting a .600 hitting percentage with a match-high 13 kills in 20 swings, erring just once. Hull his .389 with 10 kills in 18 attacks with three errors. Peterson added 11 kills and Sonoma State hit .283 as a team. Ross had 31 assists while
Taylor Krenwinkel recorded 15 digs and three service aces.
The Seawolf defense held the Gator offense to a .060 clip as Kelly Ostello had only six kills for SF State.
Sonoma State will head into the second half of the conference season, facing Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and Chico State on Saturday, both on the road.
