BOX SCORE: #23 Sonoma State 3, Cal Poly Pomona 0
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Defense reigned supreme on Senior Night, and in a big way. Sonoma State, led by seniors
Keala Peterson,
Taylor Krenwinkel and
Lindsay Lytle on their special night, rejected 12 total attacks, recorded 54 digs and held Cal Poly Pomona to a .063 hitting percentage en route to a dominating 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-11, 25-21) over the Broncos on Saturday night at The Wolves' Den.
The Seawolves, who were ranked No. 5 in last week's official NCAA Division II West Region poll, will now await word on their postseason fate. Although, two convincing wins at home this weekend should have sealed Sonoma State's bid to reach the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championships for the fourth straight season. The official announcement will be made on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. via a live selection show at
NCAA.com.
Saturday's win in straight sets was Sonoma State's 13th sweep of the season. The Seawolves lost only six sets (33-6) during 12 home matches this season, three of which came at the mercy of undefeated Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 30. Wrapping up the regular season with a 21-6 overall record, SSU finished second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with a 18-4 mark, the best conference record since 1997. Top-ranked Cal State San Bernardino concluded the season at 27-0 overall and 22-0 in the CCAA, marking the first time in conference history that a team has gone undefeated in CCAA action. 15th-ranked UC San Diego finished one game behind Sonoma State at 21-5 (17-5 CCAA).
With Saturday's loss, Cal Poly Pomona closes its season with a 14-13 overall record and 11-11 showing in the CCAA.
Peterson dominated play at the net, as the senior from nearby Sebastopol recorded a career-high five solo blocks to go along with nine kills and four digs.
Hayley Ross and
Brooke Moore also served as a brick wall on Saturday. The duo teamed up to reject four Cal Poly Pomona attacks and Ross added a solo block of her own for good measure.
Kelsey Hull and
Regan Richert blocked a pair of attempts as well, which totalled 12 team blocks.
If the Bronco attack wasn't blocked, it was dug by Krenwinkel, the senior out of San Diego. She recorded 24 digs, the most she has made in her last 17 matches. Krenwinkel was the only SSU player with double-digit digs, accounting for almost half of the team's 54 digs. Thanks to the stifling defense, the Seawolves held the Broncos well under their season average for hitting percentage. CPP connected with just 29 kills in 111 swings, erring 22 times for a .063 clip.
It wasn't just the defense that was clicking for Sonoma State, the offense was firing on all cylinders. Hull slammed a match-high 12 kills to the floor and hit .321 (three errors, 28 attacks), followed by nine kills from Peterson and
Ally Sather. Sather had another efficient night, sporting a .444 hitting percentage, making just one mistake in 18 chances. Richert and Moore chipped in with five kills each. As a team, the Seawolves hit .351 with 42 kills and nine errors in 94 swings. Ross again set Sonoma up for success, handing out 35 assists. Lytle, the senior out of Sebastopol, contibuted seven digs and one service ace.
Only six ties and two lead changes were featured in the match, most of which came in the first set. Cal Poly Pomona got to within two points at 11-9 in the opening frame, but Sonoma State stepped on the accelerator and scored 14 of the next 19 points to win 25-14. In the second set, the Seawolves scored the first eight points, eventually jumping to a 16-4 lead on their way to a dominating 25-11 win.
The third set proved to be much closer, as the Broncos pulled to within one point at 21-20. However, it would be as close as they would get. The hometown crowd of 665 in The Wolves' Den helped pump the energy back into the Seawolves, which, in turn, scored four of the next five points to win 25-21 and clinch the sweep.
