LA JOLLA, Calif- Looking to snap its losing streak, the Sonoma State women's water polo team surrendered four fourth quarter goals in a 7-5 loss to Santa Clara on Sunday morning before losing to Marist, 10-4, to wrap up the Triton Invitational without a victory. The Seawolves have fallen to 2-11 overall and have lost five straight matches.
In Sunday's opener, Sonoma State would lead NCAA Division I Santa Clara 5-3 through the first three periods, but the Broncos, who got three goals from Claire Eadington in the match, scored four goals and shutout the Seawolves in the final frame to steal the 7-5 victory.
Taylor Basso had a tremendous match in the cage, saving 10 Santa Clara shots in the loss.
Kelsey Lowy scored two goals for Sonoma State while
Jamie Bee,
Jessica Stansfield and
Malina Lorring all added goals as well.
The Broncos' goalie Wren White also had a huge game in the cage, saving 13 Seawolf shots, while getting the aforementioned three goals by Eadington as well as two from Marina Allen, one from Laura Espinosa and Taylor Harkins.
In Sonoma State's final game at the Triton Invitational, Marist, who is a NCAA Division I institution out of Poughkeepsie, New York, jumped out to a 4-0 lead at halftime and added six more goals in the final 16 minutes to cruise to a 10-4 win.
Kyleigh Shea scored two goals for Sonoma State in the loss and Stansfield and Monica Taser both added scores as well. Basso made eight saves in the contest.
Sonoma State will be back in action on Saturday in Seaside when the Seawolves face Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal Lutheran at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
