Box Score: #19 Cal State Monterey Bay 62, Sonoma State 45
SEASIDE, Calif- Led by the ten first half points by
Jaclyn Bisordi, Sonoma State got off to a quick start, leading top-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay by four points at the 9:13 mark of the first half, but the Otters went on a 16-2 run to close out the opening period, helping CSUMB cruise to a 62-45 win in Tuesday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament Opener in Seaside.
The loss eliminates the No. 8 seed Seawolves from the conference tournament, as they end their season at 9-18 overall. The No. 1 seed Otters, who came into this week's tournament ranked at No. 19 in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, will advance to Friday's semifinal game against No. 4 seed Cal State San Bernardino at Hayward.
The Otters drew first blood, scoring the game's first four points. The lead, however, wouldn't exceed more than four points and the Seawolves were able to grab their first lead (16-15) on a three pointer by Bisordi. Sonoma State would continue holding a narrow lead and eventually held a four-point advantage at 21-17 on a layup by
Elizabeth Day.
From then on, it was all Cal State Monterey Bay, as Jessica Fontenette and Michelle Santizo spearheaded a 16-2 run to hold a 33-23 lead at the halftime break. The two points scored by Sonoma State during that nine minute span to end the period came from the free throw line.
Aly Conway got the Seawolves within eight points on a jumper at the 19:10 mark (33-25), but Santizo hit a three pointer on the Otters' next possession and the lead would remain in double-digits the rest of the way. Santizo gave CSUMB its largest lead of the game at 19 (52-33) and the hosts wouldn't look back.
Bisordi scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the opening period, as she was the only Sonoma State player scoring in double-figures.
Kristina Fahey chipped in with eight points. The Seawolves started 7 for 12 from the field, but went 9 of 34 the rest of the way, ending the game 14 for 46 (34.8 percent).
Cal State Monterey Bay was led by the 16 points of London Houchin, while Fontenette and Santizo dropped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Otters shot 20 of 50 from the floor (40 percent), while the nation's top defense shined, forcing 14 Sonoma State turnovers and scoring 19 points off those miscues.
Sonoma State, who was picked to finish 10th in the conference's preseason coaches poll, made an appearance in the CCAA tournament for the first time since 2008. The Seawolves will look to improve upon a 9-18 record, as SSU will lose just one senior to graduation --
