Seawolves Sink Otters In Overtime Thriller, 12-11

Sophomore Laura Kunz scored the tying and game-winning goals.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Laura Kunz's shot late in sudden death overtime glanced off the goalkeeper and floated in to the net to give Sonoma State an exciting 12-11 come from behind win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday afternoon at Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves trailed by four in the fourth quarter before mounting a late rally that saw them tie the game, then overtake the Otters in overtime.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Seawolves and avenges a 13-10 loss to the Otters in February in Seaside.  Sonoma goes to 5-18 on the season while CSUMB drops to 10-14.

Cal State Monterey Bay got the first goal of the game, just 1:35 in.  It was quickly answered by Sonoma's Kyleigh Shea, setting off a pattern of trading goals that saw neither team take a multi-goal lead until the waning seconds of the first half.

Down 7-5 at the break, the Seawolves would see the deficit grow to three and then four, when Chloe McRae scored with 6:38 left in the game.  Just 24 seconds after McRae's score, Bridgette Souza found the back of the net and the comeback was on.

Goals from Kelsey Lowy and Lindsay Rangel pulled Sonoma within one, then with just 67 seconds left, Laura Kunz scored the first of her two goals to bring the Seawolves even at 11-11.

Though both teams would have an opportunity to score in the first two overtime periods, strong defense and stellar goalkeeping by Sonoma's Kelsey Goode and CSUMB's Christina Vournas kept the game tied.

With 1:24 in the third, sudden death overtime period, the Seawolves got the game-winner when Kunz sneaked one past the line.

Lowy led the Seawolves with three goals while Kunz and Rangel each posted two.  McRae had a game-high five goals for the Otters.

Goode was credited with 12 saves for the Seawolves while her counterpart Vournas had 14 in a busy day for goalkeepers.

The Seawolves will host George Washington University later on Tuesday.  Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
