Water Polo Falls In Second OT Game Of The Day

Jessica Stansfield scored three goals in the OT loss to George Washington.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- For the second time in one day, the Sonoma State women's water polo team took its opponent to overtime, but it was George Washington who escaped with the narrow 10-9 victory to finish Tuesday's action at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves split their two overtime games on Tuesday, moving to 5-19 this season while the Colonials improve to 3-8.

It was an extremely close match all evening, as neither team led by more than one goal at any point. Sonoma State had to play catch up the whole game, though, and was never able to grab a lead. It was knotted at 4-4 at halftime and at 6-6 after three quarters of play.

George Washington scored a goal with 3:15 remaining in regulation to go up 8-7, but Lindsay Rangel fired a shot with 1:37 left to send the match to the extra period. The Colonials thenled 9-8 after a goal at the 1:25 mark of the first overtime, but a Jessica Stansfield score would again knot the game up at 9-9, the ninth tie of the match. However, it was a goal by GWU's Erin Delker from 15 meters out with 46 seconds left in the second OT frame that gave the Colonials the win as darkness fell upon the pool deck.

Stansfield led the way for Sonoma State with three goals and Kelsey Lowy added two. Taylor Basso made the start in the cage and saved seven shots.

For George Washington, Allison Peotter scored three while Rachael Bentley and Monica Hanson added two scores. Charlotte Schou made nine saves.

Sonoma State will head to Los Angeles this weekend to participate in the Loyola Marymount Tournament, starting with a 9 a.m. match against WWPA-foe Colorado State on Friday.
