Box Scores: #21 SSU 3, CSUEB 1 / #21 SSU 6, CSUEB 3

SANTA ROSA, Calif- For the second doubleheader in a row, rain forced Sonoma State to play at its home away from home at Santa Rosa Junior College, but it didn't slow the 21st-ranked Seawolves at all as the boys in blue came away with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Cal State East Bay on Sunday afternoon. SSU improves to 18-6 overall and 11- 6 in the CCAA. CSUEB falls to 7-20 and 3-15.

#21 Sonoma State 3, Cal State East Bay 1

After a scoreless first inning, it was the visiting Pioneers who broke through with the first run of the day on a sacrifice fly by Hector Iribe with the bases loaded, scoring Charlie Sharrer. The runners on first and second then advanced up a base on a passed ball by Kyle Cerrudo, however, SSU starter Thomas Lee snagged a sharp line drive right back at him to end the threat.

It didn't take long for the Seawolves to get the run back, as Cerrudo gave the Pionners a taste of their own medicine -- a sacrifice fly scoring Kyle Jones to knot the game at 1-1. It was then a pitching duel between CSUEB's Brandyn Bell and Lee, as neither team was able to get anything going. That is, until the Seawolf seventh.

Filippi delivered an RBI double, scoring Cameron Cook for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh, which chased Bell from the game. In came Zachary Wong, who walked three straight batters, including one with the bases loaded, putting Sonoma State up 3-1. Wong only lasted those three batters as Xavier De La Cruz came on in relief to retire the next two batters and get Cal State East Bay out of the bases loaded jam.

It was the Ian Ocon show from then on out, as he came on in the Pioneer seventh. He didn't allow a hit in his 2.1 innings pitched, but he walked two and struckout three. Lee has a quality start, tossing 6.2 innings and giving up five hits and the one run while striking out ten pioneers, six of which were backwards K's.

Alex Todd led the way offensively with two hits while Filippi, Jones and Cerrudo had a hit and a RBI each.

In the nightcap, Kenny Arnerich carried the Seawolves deep into the contest, despite a small hiccup in the third inning. He allowed a RBI triple to Jared Berrier, who also scored on a wild pitch by Arnerich, giving the Pioneers the 2-1 lead. This came after Sonoma State took the early 1-0 lead on two consecutive doubles by Todd and Jones in the bottom half of the second.

The Seawolves then jumped back on top in their half of the third on a two-RBI double by Todd, giving SSU the 3-2 lead. In the fifth, O'Koyea Dickson came through with a RBI double of his own, scoring Cook for what would be a critical run, putting the Seawolves up 4-2.

Arnerich ran into a bit of trouble in the seventh as he flirted with 100 pitches in the game. After a quick out, Arnerich surrendered a single and a walk, putting runners on first and second. However, he forced a pop up and a strikeout to end the inning, concluding his day on the mound. Arnerich gave up just two hits in the contest while walking three and striking out four.

After Cal State East Bay reliever Johnny Volk loaded the bases in the eighth, head coach Dirk Morrison elected to send in Nolan Cassidy, who walked Justin Cerrao, bringing home a run for the 5-2 lead. Then, Filippi hit a sacrifice fly to score Randy Wells, but it would be all Sonoma State would get, as they led 6-2.

In the ninth, Brian Bordagaray replaced Kendall Davis, who pitched the eighth and allowed just one runner via a walk. Bordagaray walked the leadoff hitter and Sharrer reached base on an error by Dickson at first. With two runners on and no outs, Lincoln Clapper grounded out, advancing the runners up a base. It was then a groundout by Andrew Woolfe two Serrao at second that brought home the Pioneers third run of the game. It would be all they could muster, though, as Bordagaray forced pinch hitter Josh Rush to fly out for the final out of the game.

It secured Arnerich his fourth victory of the season (4-0). It was the offense of Todd, who went 2 for 2 with two RBI. Seven other SSU batters reached base safely via a hit.

Sonoma State will return to action on Saturday when it heads to Turlock for a doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus, the front end of the home-and-home series between the Warriors and Seawolves. First pitch from Turlock is scheduled for 11 a.m.
