Water Polo Ends Regular Season With Loss At Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif- Jessica Stansfield scored two early goals to put Sonoma State up 3-2 in the second period, but Pacific rallied for six unanswered goals over the next eight minutes, helping the Tigers earn the 9-6 win over the Seawolves on Saturday morning in Stockton. SSU, ending the regular season with a 8-26 record, will head into the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 seed Santa Clara in the opening round on Friday in Hayward.

Natalie Del Carlo and Stansfield put three goals up on the scoreboard in the ten minutes of the match, but Sonoma State would be held scoreless until the 3:07 mark of the third quarter on a score by Kyleigh Shea. Malina Lorring and Kelsey Lowy would add a goal each in the fourth, but the Seawolves were unable to overcome the five-goal deficit in the final period.

Goalie Kelsey Goode made five saves in the cage for Sonoma State.

The winner of the three-day event will earn the automatic bid into the 2011 National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, Mich., May 13-15, 2011.

Sonoma State will take on Santa Clara at Noon on Friday.
