Box Score: Cal Poly Pomona 11, Sonoma State 4

STOCKTON, Calif- Kyle Jones went 2 for 3 and scored two runs and Alex Todd had a pair of hits, but the Sonoma State baseball team was eliminated from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Championship Tournament after a 11-4 loss to Cal Poly Pomona in a loser-out game on Friday at Klein Family Field in Stockton. The Seawolves fall to 33-19 while the Broncos remain alive in the tournament, improving to 31-20.

UPDATE:  On Saturday night, Kyle Jones was named to the All-Tournament team.  The senior from Thousand Oaks batted .571 (4-for-7) in the Seawolves' two games.

Sonoma State, which was ranked at No. 3 in this week's NCAA Division II West Region poll, will now await word on its postseason fate when the NCAA tournament selections are announced at 7 p.m. on Sunday. The top four teams in the final regional poll will advance to the west region tournament next weekend at a site to be determined.

After a 22-9 loss in Thursday's opening round to Chico State, Sonoma State had looked to rebound against Cal Poly Pomona, as the winner would move on and the loser would go home. However, it was the Broncos who drew first blood in the third on a two-run home run by the CCAA Most Valuable Player Travis Taijeron. CPP then tacked on three more runs over the next two innings to take a 5-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, Cameron Cook began the rally, doubling down the left field line to leadoff the frame. After Cal Poly Pomona got two straight outs, Alex Todd singled home Cook before Kyle Jones tripled to score Todd. Randy Wells would double to left field to score Jones and the Seawolves cut the lead to two at 5-3.

However, the wheels began coming off, as the Broncos plated six runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to eight runs at 11-3. The Seawolves got a run in during the ninth when Jones scored on a passed ball, but it would be all they would get as Sonoma State was sent home after a 11-4 loss.

Joey Van Cleave (4-2), who made just his third start, but 15th appearance of the season, was tagged with the loss after going the first three and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out three. Todd and Jones had two hits for Sonoma State offensively.

Cal Poly Pomona, meanwhile, had 18 hits in the ballgame, including a 4 for 5 effort from Chris Miller. Tyson Edwards and Taijeron had three hits apiece. It was the pitching of CPP's Kevin Bosson, though, who shut SSU down, allowing seven hits in eight innings of work. He improved to 10-3 as he struck out six batters. Jake Reed came on in relief in the ninth and struckout the side to end the loser-out game.
