Heller Qualifies For NCAA's, Sonoma Finishes Ninth

AMARILLO, Texas- Spencer Heller carded rounds of 79, 76 and 73 to finish third on the individual leaderboard, one of three individuals to qualify for the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships on May 11-14. However, the rest of the Sonoma State women's golf team saw their season come to a close with a ninth place finish at the NCAA Division II Super Region 4 Tournament at Tascosa Country Club in Amarillo, Texas.

Heller was the top individual out of the team's that did not qualify for the national tournament, firing a 12-over par 228 in the 54-hole event; she was third overall behind medalist Carla Cooper of Tarleton State (222) and Sophie Elstrott of Western Washington (227). Heller will represent Sonoma State at nationals, taking place at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.

Chelsa Robinson (80-81-82--243) came in at 29th for the Seawolves while Brittani Markowski (83-87-87--257), Alison Ross (85-88-85--258) and McKayla Kennedy (90-87-86--263) finished 46th, 47th and 49th in the three-day regional.

Tarleton State (+59; 923) earned the team title as St. Edward's (+75; 939) and Western Washington (+79; 943) punched its tickets to Allendale, Mich., finishing in the top three. Central Oklahoma (951), Grand Canyon (954), Cal State Monterey Bay (956), Northeastern State (970) and Nebraska-Omaha (972) all finished ahead of Sonoma State (984).

The national tournament, in which Heller will compete in, will be four rounds of golf (72 holes), starting May 11. It was the sixth top-5 finish for Heller this season. Sonoma State, ranked 14th in the most recent National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division II Coaches poll, sees its season come to an end after finishing first in two tournaments and second in three others.
